Transportation Anyone?

Have you ever wanted to be a time traveler? DSC00090
When you were a kid, did you dream of stepping into a Time Machine, and go see yourself in another time in space? Did you ever want to be in Back to the Future so you could drive a DeLorean into Picasso’s studio? Or just follow your soul through many lives to see what you have learned like in Cloud Atlas?

Well, you already do. Looking at the images is the vehicle that transports us. Every time you open an old photo album or glance at the baby picture on the fridge or even watch a video on your phone from last week, that’s time traveling. Those images have the ability to transport us into another time and space. You feel all the feelings, smell all the smells and remember why your tummy tingles at the sight of THAT picture of when you and that other person first met.AIW_4511

That image is a slice of time, captured. At every point in the process of this relationship with our new future friends, what is in mind is the part we play in your journey back in time.IMG_2813

The “Almighty Oz” is actually a woman in her most comfortable yoga pants, or a man in his favorite chair, sitting behind their personal transportation device, sorting, smiling and feeling really good about being part of something that will stay.

From first phone call, to the trip to the post office, we’re being one of the many wheels that run the machine that brings a captured time, back to your future.AIW-029

Why I do this…(Video and Photography)

IMG_7415 Why do I do this? I was asked this recently and my first response was, “Because I was born to do it” – and I really believe I was. I have always been drawn to electronics and cameras and buttons and gizmos, even as a child and especially once I dove head first into video production at age 14.

The real question may be, “What drives you to go without sleep, carry 25lbs+ of gear, trudge through rain and mud and blazing sun, and sit in front of the computer for endless hours – uncomfortable and tired but pressing on?”

My answer is complex and means we will likely visit this topic again.

I do it because I love it. What a boring answer. It is true, I do love it, but what do I love about it?

IMG_7008

I do it because of the way it feels. The way it feels to create on all levels. The way it feels to exercise my mind – my technical mind, my arty-farty creative mind, and my spiritual and emotional self.  Couple that with my instinctual need to experience the world in every way possible, add in a good dose of adrenaline and you have yourself an imaging junkie.

IMG_6684  I do it because I have to. Not in a “go to work, make money”
have to, but in a   “feed my soul and fulfill my needs” have to.

So…I study light and posing and read nerdy manuals and get
excited about a new piece of gear or camera setting or light kit.
I notice where the light is falling and
where it is not…
and I constantly think in terms of framing and color.

I am made restless by a drive to create, a drive to feel the way I
feel when I am creating and to feel the way I feel when I look at the images later.

It is true that sometimes I can do it too much – I can shoot so often that my mind gets tired of thinking through the camera settings, my body gets tired of carrying such a load, and my neck gets tired of sitting in the edit bay.

Even on these days something amazing happens when I am in the center of a shoot, directing or posing or shooting or climbing around rocks to find a new angle – all that tiredness and fatigue falls away.  For that moment, feeling bone tired at a cellular level changes into that magical, driving, creative energy that somehow negates all else…

Of course, I feel tired again as I am packing up and walking to the parking lot,  but for the creative moment I am 100% present and tied to the universal energy that connects to my soul – The pathway which allows me to access my gifts and return those gifts to the world.

So why do I do this? Because it feels so dang good.

Abby and Patrick, Maui Wedding

Abby and Patrick were an absolute joy to photograph. Although the weather was difficult – intermittent Kapalua rain – and the bride’s ready room was hot like a sauna, they smiled through it all.

These two have been together on and off since the sixth grade and their bond, connection, and love was clearly evident. Couples like this make shooting a real pleasure – even when we had to run from the rain and shot from underneath an umbrella. In fact, the downpour stopped just long enough for the ceremony and started again as I clicked the shutter on the last of the family shots…sending us running off the beach.

The day was a little like life actually – the beauty of the day and the difficulty all rolled into one. The rain created the most exquisite light while it also brought forward uncertainty and challenge. The good and the bad offered up equally.

So how did the good win? Through everyone’s attitude and acceptance of the circumstance – and the dedication to celebrating the marriage, celebrating the day, and celebrating deep love.

The rain, the sun, joy and sorrow – all will have their say.

Listen to all of them, hold tight to the ones you love and celebrate the smiles that exist even in the rain.
